New Yard Waste Recycling Service

Filed under: Other — Baker @ 9:16 am

All Salt Lake City residents are to have brown yard waste cans included with their waste services.  The city will discontinue curbside leaf pickup and Christmas tree removal, instead relying exclusively on these cans.  Waste service fees will be increasing by 10% starting October 1st. First pickup for the included service begins the week of Oct. 4.  The yard waste program will be year-round on the same days as regular trash pickup.  Those who already were in the program will no longer see the charge itemized.  For more information, see the frequently-asked-question list at the Salt Lake City waste service website:  http://www.slcgov.com/slcgreen/recycle/expansionFAQ.htm

A ROSE PARK FARMERS MARKET!

Filed under: volunteer work, food — Baker @ 4:37 pm

farmers-market-image.jpg
I have lived in this neighborhood for 30 years, and each year, as the mornings begin to get cooler I think about our garden. My parents grew more than we needed usually, and each year I remember sharing the crop with neighbors and friends.Though our houses may be small (I prefer to say “responsible”) our lots are fairly large for a neighborhood with such urban proximity. These large yards allow us to cultivate gardens that can benefit others. In addition, we have folks in our neighborhood who paint, bake, sew, build, etc. that should all have a local outlet to share their talents with the rest of us, for a reasonable fee :)

We at RPR are looking for a half dozen volunteers to head up the Rose Park Farmers Market Committee. Over the next several months the committee will meet to discuss the scope and size, location, marketing, permits, and potential offerings for the summer of 2011’s Rose Park Farmers Market. If you are interested, please drop us a line at roseparkrevival@gmail.com We think this idea is a perfect fit for our community! Please help us make it a reality by helping us get it off the ground. Thanks in advance for your support!

Thanks,  Kevin Rogers

Rose Park in the News

Filed under: Rose Park in the News — Baker @ 9:02 pm

ROSE PARK — A townhouse fire that officials believe started in a utility room exploded to quickly damage the four-plex and displace all 14 residents there Wednesday.

Fire officials estimate damage at more than $100,000.

Shaleena Dimick, 16, was about to take a shower when her brother started shouting about a fire in the basement’s utility room, where family members had recently put a load of laundry in the dryer.

The family quickly evacuated from the townhouse at 1022 N. Victoria Way (940 West) just before 6 p.m. and alerted neighbors.

Dimick’s boyfriend ran back into the apartment several times to retrieve a cat and locate another that had gone missing in the chaos.

“I went to grab a bucket of water to put out the fire,” Dimick said. “But my mom stopped me. The fire had spread so much.”

By the time crews arrived, the fire had gone from the basement up the back wall and spread to a townhouse with a shared attic and caused significant fire and smoke damages to both places. Two townhouses sustained only smoke damage, said Salt Lake City Fire spokesman Scott Freitag.

Crews called out for a second alarm because of the extent of the fire and smoke drifting into the attic. The fire was contained within 25 minutes and fully doused after about an hour.

Dimick was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

Officials are investigating the cause of the fire but believe it originated in the basement utility room of Dimick’s townhouse. The family said they believe the fire started from the dryer, adding that they heard some type of explosion.

“I’ve lost everything,” said Debra Dimick, Shaleena’s mother, while holding a cat in her arms. “I don’t know what to do.”

Debra Dimick said the family had lived there about a year but hadn’t been able to afford fire insurance.

“I was going to get it next month, but now it’s too late,” she said as she burst into tears.

Freitag said the main floor of the original townhouse is compromised, and the Dimicks and residents in the adjacent home will be unable to live there until repairs are made. Remaining residents should be able to return within a couple days.

Emergency Response Workshop

Filed under: Other — Baker @ 5:37 pm

Dear Community Members,The Community Emergency Response Coordination Workshop has been rescheduled.  Please join us at the workshop on Saturday, August 14, 2010.  Continental breakfast will be offered at 8:30 am.  Welcome and opening address will begin at 8:50.  The key topic for this workshop is post disaster communications.  The focus will be collaboration to incorporate existing entities and plans, as well as the development of new plans, to establish a defined communications system to be implemented in the event that normal communications channels are not available after a large scale disaster.

This workshop is for anyone interested in community emergency response and post disaster communications capabilities in Salt Lake City.

We are progressing in establishing CERT’s throughout the City and continue to ask the community councils for assistance in finding representatives in every neighborhood to participate in these efforts.  We also encourage everyone involved in community emergency response plans in other community groups such as churches to attend because it is vital that we coordinate with existing plans and efforts.  Below/attached is the agenda.  Didn’t attend the previous workshops?  No problem.  Please join us at this one!

Pass this on to anyone you feel would have an interest in attending.
