INFORMATION ITEMS

Item  1 “Community Garden” by Scott Steenblik (359-0354)
We learn by teaching and doing in the garden.  It is a community garden because we have the opportunity to learn and teach and receive support from the Community Council, our neighbors, neighborhood businesses and each other.
During the past year we have had the financial support of Mountain Valley Seeds.  We plan to use the support from Chevron Oil this coming year to garden from March 2008 – March 2009.  Yes, we can garden and harvest in the winter.  It is our plan to install additional water pumps and improve our water delivery system.  We grow 50+ varieties of vegetables each year along with a variety of flowers.
Everyone is welcome to come.  We will teach, learn and harvest together.  We are also looking for someone with woodworking skills to help us build a sign for the garden this year.  We are always looking for additional financial support so we can continue our efforts and grow with the garden.  If you are willing and interested, please contact me or a member of the Community Council board.

Rose Park Community Gardens  877 N Cornell Street (1525 W)
Wednesday’s 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.   Saturday’s 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.

Item  2
We have established a Rose Park Community e-mail system.  If you would like to be added to the list, please contact Ron Jarrett by phone at – 595-6259 or by e-mail at - r.jarrett@comcast.net

Item  3
The Gigante Center on North Temple and Redwood Road is currently on hold.  One of the partners withdrew from the project and he holds the title to the property.  The remaining partners are working with him to obtain the titles and move ahead with the project.

Item  4
The Community Plaza on Redwood Road and 700 North is moving toward final approval.  The plans for this center are a huge improvement over the current eye sore. The developer and architect requested suggestions from the community for tenants in the mini-mall.  The suggestions coming from those who attended our last Community Council meeting included:  Fabric Shop, Copy Center, Craft Store, Bicycle Shop, Book Store, Bagel Shop and a family oriented restaurant such as Applebee’s, Sizzler, Olive Garden, etc. These suggestions have been passed along to the developer.

Item  5
The Rose Park Community Festival is fast approaching.  April 26th is the date.  We need your help with all of the events of the day.  Please feel free to contact any member of the board or Rosemary Bennett (595-0065) to volunteer your help.  The web page is up and running with wonderful pictures and information.  Take a minute to check it out.

Item  6  Crime Report
Each month the Salt Lake City Police department prepares a report of all Community Council areas.  You can locate this report on the Salt Lake City Police web site by going to:  slcgov.com/police/crimestats/crimestatshome.htm
During January 2008 the overall count of reported crimes for our community went down by 9 incidents.  Specifically it dropped from 23 auto thefts to 12 (this includes those cars that were found in are area but necessarily stolen from it), burglary went from 12 to 8, damaged property reports went from 4 to 13.  Other areas may have dropped or added one or two reported incidents.  Of the 26 Councils we are #15 on the list from least to most reports.
We watch these reports and take note of the areas where they are occurring.  You can do the same by coming to our meetings and getting a copy of these reports or by going on line.  It is important to stay current on the things happening in our area and to be watchful in your neighborhoods.  More information will be coming to you shortly on how to be more involved in our community crime prevention through our Neighborhood Watch program and Mobil Watch.

Irresponsible Dog Owners

Filed under: commentary — Baker @ 8:35 pm

Last Fall, my 6-year old son was attacked by a neighborhood dog.  Animal Control removed the dangerous animal, but the dog soon returned to the same short leash near the owner’s front yard.  My son is now terrified to walk in the neighborhood because of all the potentially dangerous dogs in our neighborhood.  On 15th West, a Rottweiler roams his front yard and harasses people as they pass by on the sidewalk.  This dog is clearly a threat.  It destroyed a neighbor’s backyard, bit a man walking by, attacked a woman who lives at the very home and has been maced by the mailman and yet this dog continues to threaten and harass the neighborhood.  My four-year-old daughter and I walk by the Rottweiler’s home twice a week to attend preschool and on many occasions my daughter has fallen to the ground paralyzed by fear.  Now we walk on the opposite side of the road and carry pepper spray.    So I seek answers to how to protect my family, and why in the world do these dogs continue to harass pedestrians and neighbors?   Most dog owners care greatly for their beloved pets, but some pet owners need a wake up call, it is not okay to abuse and train dogs to hurt people.  What do you think?
