Newman News-September 17th
Charging Limits for Paid School Meals
We have an agreement with our lunch room that students who pay for their school meals may charge up to two breakfasts and two lunches if they run out of money in their account. They will receive a reminder when this happens so they can bring money to put their account. They will not be permitted to get a meal beyond this charge limit but can receive a milk and a fruit to tide them over for the afternoon.
School Community Council
The next meeting of the School Community Council will be on Monday, October 1 at 4:00 p.m. in the library. We invite interested parents to attend. The council discusses issues related to student and school success and provides guidance for what happens at Newman Elementary School.
We are the Tigers, Hear us ROAR!
Newman School has implemented a program this year to help students get excited about the following four areas:
R- Respectful and Responsible (Being kind to others)
O- On Time Everyday (Getting to school on time and here everyday)
A- Active (Getting exercise everyday)
R- Reading Everyday (Reading at least 20 minutes/day-100 minutes/week)
We have a variety of activities, incentives and recognitions to promote these positive behaviors. Thank you to you parents for encouraging your students in these areas!
Reflections
“I can make a difference by….” is the 2007-2008 Reflections theme. Parents and teachers, please encourage your student(s) to participate by submitting a work of art in the following categories: visual art, theater, literature, film/video, musical composition, photography, choreography/dance, and/or three dimensional art. The deadline for entry submission is November 16th , 2007.
English Language Development
Newman School will implement 45 minute block periods each day this year to make sure that our English language learners are getting the support they need to become proficient in English. Teachers will trade students to group them according to their needs. Non-English language learners will be grouped together and work on other pertinent literacy skills during that time.
Neighborhood Trash Campaign
At the request of our neighborhood community councils, we are reminding all of us to be on the lookout for trash in our neighborhood and take time to pick it up and throw it away in appropriate trash receptacles. Thank you!
