Annual Assessment Approaches for the Salt Lake City School District Magnet Extended Learning Program

The Extended Learning Program (ELP) of the Salt Lake City School District offers opportunities for students who show high academic abilities in grades kindergarten (K) through eighth. Currently we are accepting requests to assess students for possible placement into next school year’s kindergarten ELP magnet. We also have a few placements available in the 1^st through 6^th grade ELP magnet. You should consider your child for the program if several or most of the following describe your child:

• Quickly understands new ideas

• Has an exceptional memory

• Obsesses in an area of interest

• Insists on perfection

• Has a high interest in books

• Displays advanced reasoning

• abilities

• Displays an extensive vocabulary for age

• Shows a great deal of curiosity

• Has a long attention span for some projects

• Displays advanced reasoning

  abilities

• Has a high interest in books

• Tends to prefer older companions

   

Students qualifying for an ELP placement have shown they need an academic program which allows them to move more quickly, work with complex concepts and delve more deeply into academic content. The elementary ELP magnet is housed at Hawthorne, Whittier, and Emerson Elementary. Students and their families must reside, and continue to reside, within the Salt Lake City School District to participate in the program. Please call in January and February, if you are interested in requesting ELP assessment for your pre-kindergartener or k-5^th grader. If you would like more information call 578-8573.

The Asian Association of Utah located at 1588 S. Major St.(between state and main) is offering a ESL for daily life, work, citizenship, and computer literacy course.

• Adults of any nationality are welcome

• Fee or low-fee classes (sliding scale)

• Small classes with certified ESL teachers

• Study job search, life skills, and reading and writing to prepare for high school or college.

• Refugee employment and workforce services counselors in the same building

• Easy to change schedule or reduce hours

• Okay to attend just the days you have off work

• Open registration at any time for classes

Monday-Friday:9:00 am-12:00pm

12:30-3:00 pm**(or all day)

By Appointment: Personal citizenship test practice. Evening classes held when demand is sufficient.

**These classes include computer keyboarding, basic windows,Internet and email, and easy multi-media computer reading programs, all in a small computer lab for refugees, immigrants and visitors only.

Information Items

1. Please keep your gutters and drainage grill clear of debris. 

2. City personnel have requested that we allow more space between garbage can(s) and recycling can(s).  The claw on the trucks are big and need space to operate so pickup can be smoother.

3. During the May meeting, we will be voting on three vice-chair positions.  Val, Michael, and Scott have completed two years of service. They may run for re-election.  There is also one vice-chair position that became vacant when Todd Cummings was called to be the bishop of his church ward.  If anyone desired to serve, please contact Kenneth Neal (595-6325).

4. The crime report for last month shows that there were 15 auto thefts, 8 aggravated assaults, 7 burglaries, 2 car prowls, 5 auto strips, 5 gang related crimes, and 1 sexual assault.

Item 1–Snow Removal–SLC ordinance 14.020.070 requires all residents to plow the full width and breadth on all sidewalks adjacent to their property within 24 hours of end of storm

Do not blow or plow snow onto the street.

Item 2–Crime Report–In November there were 3 aggravated assaults, 15 autos stolen/recovered, 9 burglaries, 3 car prowls, 1 car strip, 4 gang related crimes, 2 robberies, and 3 sexual assaults.

Do not warm your car up  and the leave the engine running in the drive way–it is a sure invitation to theft. 

3- Plans are moving forward on the permit process for an outdoor shopping center in the block on North Temple and Redwood Road in front of Sutherlands Lumber.  If all goes well, construction may begin the first week of February.

4- The Utah Transit Authority is accepting public input on various studies to determine where to lay the Trax spur going to the Airport.  One proposed idea being studied is along North Temple.  This is a follow-up from previous studies conducted years ago.

5- Jen Seelig, the Utah Representative for District 23, covering Rose Park has invited people to call her and voice their opinion on issues affecting our area.  She mentioned that bills concerning healthcare,  concealed weapons permit funding, and payday-type loan centers are going to be hot topics.
