Item 1: The Mayor’s office announced that Southwest Airlines is going to award 2 free tickets to anywhere in the world. The award is based on an essay contest for Senior Citizens
Item 2: Roy Williams, Airport Director, gave an update on the airport. There are 108 departing flights per day and the city collects $3 for each departing passenger. The airport also controls Airport #2 and the Tooele Airport.
Item 3: The Chair of the East Bench Community Council stated that the first time a child is exposed to pornography is at age 8 and the first time a child is exposed to it on the internet is at age 11. An anti-pornography conference will be conducted on September 28th. Watch the city website for more information.
Item 4: Elliot Brinton, chair of the Sunnyside East Council, is concerned about the relocation of the Museum of Natural History to a site that straddles the Shore Line Trail. He also stated that it is proposed to allow commercial development, including a reception center, on 15-20 acres on Heritage Park. There will be an open space bonding item on the next ballot.
Item 5: Crime report for August showed 1 aggravated assault; 16 autos stolen or recovered;13 burglaries;8 car prowls;2 car strips; 2 gang related crimes;and 2 weapon drivby shootings. This placed us 10th out of 13 council areas.

Day-Riverside Library Events

October 2, Exhibit–Start Seeing Trees /Art and the Environment through November 30. Tree planting October 7 at 10:00 am and a reception from noon-2:00 pm.
Monday October 9(Nov. 13 and Dec. 11)–Mondays are for Murder–Book discussion group featuring mystery and suspense novels.
October 10 at 7pm Ready to Read: A Parent Workshop: A parent/caregiver workshop about emergent literacy. Learn how to help young children become aware and comfortable with books and language.
Saturday Ocotober 14–Exhibit, Artistic Gourds by Carma Hart Fuller, through December 8. Reception November 4, 3:30-4:30.
Family Story Time–October 5/19, November 2/16/30, and December 7/21 at 7pm
Book Baby–Wednesdays at 10 am
Preschool Storytime–Tuesdays at 11 am

News from Newman

PTA meeting Thursday September 14th at 4:30pm. They will have a babysitter.
Scouting–Newman has both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. Boy Scouts is Monday at 4pm while Girl Scouts is Wednesday at 4pm.
Chess Club–All newman students are welcome to join! A desire to play chess, a signed permission form, and a $5 fee is all that is requiered.

Days & Times: Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:20-4:00

Community Council September 6, 2006

2. Day-Riverside Library will be celebrating its ten year anniversary on September 30th. Crafts, fun and more.
3. The home seized by the DEA on 736 Colorado St. has been bought by the city. The city plans to tear down the existing home and rebuild a 3 bedroom home.
4. On the North/West side of North Temple and Redwood road developers Nexos are planning to build a 160,000 square foot retail area including spaces for restaurants, a large anchor store, furniture store, and professional offices.
5. The community council is interested in having people buy vacuumed packed vegetable seeds. You can buy 1 can for $30.00 from Mountain Valley Seed, Inc
